Lee Sweeney - Offensive Player of the Year

Friendship, Sr.

Quarterback

Ht: 6-4 Wt: 215

Why chosen: The Class A Mr. Football Back finalist threw for more than 2,800 yards and 30 TDs, leading Friendship to an 11-2 record. Gaudy stats and good size have Sweeney the focus of Division I-A schools.

My hidden talent: Good with children.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Teach and coach.

Best player I faced this season: Matt Peardon, Boyd Buchanan.

 

Gaston Miller

Riverdale, Jr.

Running back

Ht: 5-7 Wt: 155

Why chosen: Miller rushed for 2,110 yards on 224 carries and 33 TDs during a remarkable junior campaign. His big-play ability (9.4 yards per carry) helped make the Warriors’ offense unstoppable.

My hidden talent: I can back-flip.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Act in movies, probably comedy.

Best player I faced this season: Tim Leach, Franklin.

Why chosen: Ladd rushed for 1,991 yards on 232 carries and 24 touchdowns this season, serving as the catalyst for an offense that averaged 35 points a game and enabled White House to go 13-1.

My hidden talent: Putting together music on the computer.

Best player I faced this season: Graig Cooper, Melrose.

 

Roger Herndon

Greenbrier, Sr.

Ht: 5-11 Wt: 185

Why chosen: The Class 3A Mr. Football Back of the Year guided Greenbrier to the BlueCross Bowl, where the Bobcats fell to Fulton. Herndon finished with a Midstate-best 2,268 rushing yards and 32 TDs.

My hidden talent: Working with computers.

Best player I faced this season: Antonio Hamilton, Fulton.

 

Patrick Turner

Goodpasture, Sr.

Ht: 6-5 Wt: 210

Why chosen: The highly touted Division I-A recruit and Class 2A Mr. Football Back of the Year wound up with 48 catches for 880 yards and 10 touchdowns, helping a young Cougars’ team go 9-4.

My hidden talent: I’m a Madden Football champion on PlayStation 2.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Go into business.

Best player I faced this season: Kevion Jones, Chattanooga Tyner.

 

Lanis Frederick

Clarksville, Sr.

Ht: 6-1 Wt: 160

Why chosen: The Midstate’s leading receiver totaled 1,061 yards and 12 TDs on 56 catches, serving as the big-play weapon for a surprise team that reached the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

My hidden talent: Poetry.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a comedian or deliver babies.

Best player I faced this season: Xavier Jenkins, Northwest.

 

Justin Jones

Riverdale, Sr.

Offensive line

Ht: 6-0 Wt: 195

Why chosen: Despite his small size, Jones was one of the most fundamentally sound linemen in the state. He was the center for a run-dominated offense that averaged 44.4 points over 15 games.

My hidden talent: Juggling.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be successful at something, maybe baseball.

Best player I faced this season: Tim Leach, Franklin.

Offensive line

Ht: 5-11 Wt: 260

Why chosen: Derrian Waters' favorite lineman to run behind was better known for his defense. Leach amassed 98 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and helped the Rebels reach the Class 5A title game.

My hidden talent: Computers.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a computer programmer.

Best player I faced this season: LaMarcus Coker, Antioch.

 

Joseph Birdsong

MBA, Sr.

Offensive line

Ht: 6-4 Wt: 275

Why chosen: A Wake Forest commitment and finalist for Division II Mr. Football Lineman, Birdsong is a superb tackle who will move to center or guard in college. He blocked for a MBA team that was 9-3.

My hidden talent: Playing Halo on Xbox.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Own a business in sales or marketing.

Best player I faced this season: Jake Simmons, Baylor.

 

Mark Thompson

DCA, Sr.

Offensive line

Ht: 6-5 Wt: 290

Why chosen: The Class A Mr. Football Lineman of the Year had a huge impact on both sides of the ball during DCA’s title run, blocking for standout back Chris Wooden while stuffing the run on defense.

My hidden talent: Restoring cars.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a high school football coach and teach auto shop.

Best player I faced this season: Joseph Ruddle, Wayne County.

 

Cory Sullins

White House, Sr.

Offensive line

Ht: 6-2 Wt: 255

Why chosen: Along with his twin brother, Cody, he solidified a physical line and was the player Ricky Ladd liked to run behind. On defense, he had 61 tackles for the state semifinalist Blue Devils.

My hidden talent: Drawing, sketching and baseball.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a sports agent, athletics director at a college, or work in the front office of a pro team.

Best player I faced this season: Graig Cooper, Melrose.

 

Bryant Hahnfeldt

MBA, Sr.

Kicker

Ht: 5-11 Wt: 180

Why chosen: The soccer standout turned football player was awarded Mr. Football Kicker of the Year after hitting 15-of-19 field goals, 23-of-24 PATs and 95% of his kickoffs went for touchbacks.

My hidden talent: Working with children in Special Olympics.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Own a business, maybe in sports.

Best player I faced this season: Rob Park, MUS.

 

Dave Thomas

Why chosen: The Class 5A Mr. Football Back’s rushing and passing stats were virtually identical, making it impossible for defenses to contain him. He ran for 1,122 yards and 15 TDs and threw for 1,136 yards and 15 TDs.

Best player I faced this season: Cortney Braswell, Baylor.

 

Chris Perkins

Riverdale, Sr.

Defensive line

Ht: 6-4 Wt: 246

Why chosen: A finalist for Class 5A Mr. Football Lineman, Perkins showed excellent speed and strength for an end. He finished with 73 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, nine sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

My hidden talent: Doing laundry.

Best player I faced this season: Rick Daniels Mulholland, Oak Ridge.

 

Jermaine Alsup

Defensive line

Ht: 5-11 Wt: 237

Why chosen: As one of the anchors for a defense that allowed 6.5 points a game, Alsup shined as an interior lineman with 108 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, nine sacks and a forced fumble.

My hidden talent: Touching my nose with my tongue.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a youth director with Big Brothers or Boys & Girls Clubs.

Best player I faced this season: Scott McMahon, Oak Ridge.

Ht: 6-0 Wt: 230

Why chosen: The two-time Region 5-5A Defensive Player of the Year and Metro Defensive MVP finished his final prep season with 60 tackles, 32 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks as an end for the 7-4 Bears.

My hidden talent: Drawing.

Best player I faced this season: Nobody.

Ht: 6-0 Wt: 190

Why chosen: A probable college prospect after a strong junior year, Butler was equally good at stopping the run and blitzing the quarterback. He had 86 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

My hidden talent: Singing R&B and rap music.

Best player I faced this season: Spencer Gulmire, Oak Ridge.

 

Rahmel Oliver

Riverdale, Sr.

Linebacker

Ht: 6-2 Wt: 200

Why chosen: Defensive MVP of the Class 5A BlueCross Bowl, Oliver burned Franklin with an interception and fumble recovery. Overall, he had a team-best 112 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and five picks.

My hidden talent: A good imagination.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a sports physical therapist.

Best player I faced this season: Spencer Gulmire, Oak Ridge.

 

Steven Hotard

Franklin, Sr.

Linebacker

Ht: 5-10 Wt: 190

Why chosen: The heart and soul of a steady defense that directed Franklin to the Class 5A title game, Hotard finished with 147 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, five sacks and two fumble recoveries.

My hidden talent: Staying up until 1 a.m. and waking up at 5:30.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a physical therapist or go into sports medicine.

Best player I faced this season: LaMarcus Coker, Antioch.

 

Cody Stubblefield

Page, Sr.

Linebacker

Ht: 6-0 Wt: 187

Why chosen: Few linebackers have a nose for the ball like Stubblefield, who amassed 138 tackles, 20 sacks and nine forced fumbles. The bruising hitter has almost 300 tackles over the last two years.

My hidden talent: Smooth talking.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Coach pro football.

Best player I faced this season: Roger Herndon, Greenbrier.

 

Michael Wilmore

Smith County, Sr.

Linebacker

Ht: 5-9 Wt: 185

Why chosen: As a gritty linebacker, Wilmore tallied 108 tackles and two interceptions. As a workhorse at tailback, he rushed for 1,345 yards and 14 TDs while leading the Owls to the Class 3A semifinals.

My hidden talent: Sleeping.

Austin Rogers

Ht: 6-2 Wt: 185

Why chosen: The best instincts around when it comes to reacting to the ball from his free safety position. The Class 2A Mr. Football Back finalist rushed for 953 yards and had 372 receiving yards.

My hidden talent: Putting up Christmas lights.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be a sports agent.

Best player I faced this season: Dustin Lindsey, Alcoa.

 

Keaton Anderson

Riverdale, Sr.

Defensive back

Ht: 5-7 Wt: 150

Why chosen: As a shutdown cornerback, this track star in the 100 and 200 meters had seven interceptions and 33 tackles. He was also an offensive threat, catching six balls for 215 yards.

My hidden talent: My body heals fast.

If I don’t play pro football, I want to: Be the fastest man in the world. I already told my mom to get tickets for the 2008 Olympics.

Best player I faced this season: Marsalous Johnson, Smyrna.

 

Ross Coffee

Ht: 5-9 Wt: 195

Why chosen: Coffee never came off the field, including special teams. He averaged 39.3 yards per punt over 26 attempts. As a hard-nosed tailback, he rushed for 1,649 yards and 21 touchdowns.
