end, continue in Warriors' rout
Game Stats
Game Photos DNJ Prep Editor One Riverdale streak came to an end Friday, while another continues to go on and on and on ... The second-ranked Warriors (8-0, 5-0 in Region 4-5A) had their scoreless quarter streak end early, but their region/district winning streak extended to 61 with a 56-6 victory over Blackman (2-6, 2-3) at Tomahawk Stadium Friday. Riverdale junior tailback Gaston Miller and senior quarterback Dave Thomas each rushed for more than 100 yards, and Thomas and younger brother Scott Thomas combined for more than 200 passing yards in the victory. Riverdale's defense had not been scored on for 22 quarters, dating back to the second quarter of a Week 2 win over Smyrna. Blackman snapped that streak with a Chip Rhome 44-yard field goal with 7:46 left in the first quarter. It cut Riverdale's lead to 7-3. Blackman added another first-quarter Rhome field goal to answer the Warriors second touchdown, but the Blaze couldn't respond again as the hosts scored the final 42 points. "Some of us were actually even crying," said Riverdale senior defensive tackle Sean Kimbrough of Blackman breaking the defense's scoreless streak. "It was a disappointment. We didn't want them to get those field goals." The school record for consecutive scoreless quarters is 26, held by the 1994 undefeated state championship team. Ironically, the 1994 team was honored at halftime of Friday's game. Thirty-four members, including players, cheerleaders and managers were recognized. Riverdale scored first when senior running back Derente Frazier scored on a 2-yard run. It took a 14-3 lead when Dave Thomas threw the first of three touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Terrence Savannah. After the second Blackman field goal, the Warriors added three second-quarter touchdowns. Dave Thomas threw a 39-yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver Rahmel Oliver and scored on a 49-yard run. The first-string quarterback left the game with an injury and his younger brother Scott, a sophomore, finished off the first-half scoring with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Oliver. Dave Thomas, who said he was only rattled on what he called a "cheap" hit from a Blackman defender, came back in the second half and connected with junior wide receiver Antwone Smith for a 15-yard touchdown. Miller added a touchdown on a 32-yard run and Scott Thomas finished off the game's scoring with a 68-yard pass to Smith. While the defenses scoreless streak ended, it still has gone 26 quarters without giving up a touchdown. "We're just glad they didn't score a touchdown," Dave Thomas said. "I forgot they had a good kicker, but long as they didn't score (a touchdown) I don't care about a field goal." Miller rushed for 135 yards on just nine carries. Dave Thomas had 109 yards on seven totes and also completed 5-of-7 passes for 115 yards. Scott Thomas was 3-of-5 passing for 92 yards. Jeremy Mimms led Blackman's offense with 62 yards rushing on 18 carries. Riverdale has not lost a region or district football game since a 14-7 loss to Mt. Juliet in 1995. |
